I have been using Office for Mac 2011 and Office for Windows 2010 Pro. Both of these open Excel files exported from Microsoft Dynamics CRM. During use of the Office 2016 for Mac Preview, the Excel files exported from Microsoft Dynamics CRM would not open. I reported this issue to the Office developers, with no apparent resolution. I am told by sales support that there is no sort of compatibility pack which may help with this issue. To the developers know why files from Microsoft Dynamics CRM are not recognized? I am not able to buy Office 2016 for Mac without this feature working.
I would be open to trying the Office 365 version first to see if it works yet, if a resolution is reached. Hi Excel files that open in 2011 should open in Excel 2016 for Mac without a problem. The first thing you should do is ensure your installation of Office and Mac OS are up to date. The current update level of Office is 15.18 Make sure your Mac has a working internet connection before checking for updates. Mac OS X updates: To get Mac OS updates, go to the App store on your dock, and then click the Updates button to reveal available updates.
Office Updates To get the update: 1. Open any Office application: 3. Make sure your Mac has a working internet connection 4.

Go to the Help menu and choose Check for Updates 5. Let AutoUpdate check for and install updates If installing the update doesn't fix the problem, please upload an example problem file (after confidential and personal information has been removed) to a public share site such as OneDrive or DropBox and share the link to the file. MVPs can get that file to the right people at Microsoft so the problem can be resolved. Hi Excel files that open in 2011 should open in Excel 2016 for Mac without a problem. If MVPs can get the file to microsoft and get the problem solve that would be nice. I have made a dropbox link with a file created through CRM. This problem is a big issue with our daily work in CRM. I'm having the same issue.
Looking at what is actually exported from Dynamics CRM shows that it is just one XML file which is a simplified form of the full XSLX file format. The export is also in plain text format.
As far as I can tell this is a 'bastard' format that Excel on Windows can handle but no other spreadsheet software can. Neither Office on Mac, Numbers, OpenOffice or LibreOffice.
Why can't Dynamics just offer a plain simple CSV export? Preferable UTF-8 encoded and all our compatibility problem would be solved!! This is so irritating and I would be very surprised if MS actually did something about this (design) issue. This is probably considered a feature and not a bug.
Hi I am also experiencing this problem exactly as described previously. I want to reiterate and add one more piece of info: 1. Export from dynamics (latest version as of 07 2017) and MS Office (mac) 2016 (all updates installed) 2. MS Office for mac 2016 cannot open file with same message as posted in previous screenshot: HTML Import Errors /. Unknown 3.
Office 2011 for mac CAN OPEN THESE EXPORTED FILES (sthe compatibility chart linked to in this thread below is INCORRECT because it states that ALL office for Mac is incompatible) 4. The export from Dynamics CRM IS some wierd format of xml, AND the files exported are HUGE, full of garbage xml. I exported a list with appx 15000 records with a resulting xls file of 103 MB!!!! When i opened this with MS Office Mac 2011 and resaved, the file was only 1.6MB. I can post a link to the original and resaved files but would rather provide only to individuals.
This is a 3 year unsolved issue. MS MUST be able to create standard export files. As a previous poster recommended: csv in UTF 8 would be faster, waaay more compatible and smaller.
